FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne police have arrested a man they said stole a vehicle before running from cops and crashing it Wednesday morning.
Just before 5:30 a.m., the vehicle was reported stolen from a driveway in the 2800 block of Bowser Avenue. Police caught up to the vehicle on Hoagland around 9 a.m. That’s when they say the man took off before hitting multiple vehicles. Those vehicles were unoccupied.
The suspect, identified as Jandre Devon Mitchell, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, according to police. He is now facing several charges.
Fort Wayne Police Department officials released the following:
On Wednesday, 03/02/2022, at approximately 5:24 AM, the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 2800 block of Bowser Avenue in reference to a stolen vehicle. Officers were informed the vehicle was just taken from the owner’s driveway prior to calling police. The owner advised a GPS is located in the vehicle but didn’t have any updates on location at this time. Officers advised to contact police as soon as any location information was available.
At approximately 9:00 AM the owner called dispatch and said GPS information was showing the vehicle was near the 3000 block of Hoagland Ave. Officers responded to the area and located the stolen vehicle parked on the street at the 3000 block of Hoagland Ave. As officers approached the stolen vehicle, the suspect fled northbound on Hoagland Ave at a high rate of speed. Officers pursued the fleeing suspect. The pursuit ended when the stolen vehicle collided with parked vehicles near the intersection of Hoagland Ave and Dewald St.
The suspect had minor injuries from the vehicle accident and was taken to a local hospital for medical attention. The other vehicles involved were parked without any passengers. The suspect was arrested for Felony Resisting Law Enforcement in a Vehicle, Felony Theft of a Motor Vehicle, and an outstanding Warrant.
This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
