FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Fort Wayne Police Department says that a woman was hospitalized after crashing an FWPD patrol car that she stole. The woman was released by the police in an earlier incident. Officers say the woman was ‘incoherent’ when they spoke to her on Columbia Avenue around 3 p.m. Monday, when they were called for an unwanted person. She then took a marked police vehicle. Officers began to chase the vehicle before it crashed into another vehicle at East State and St. Joseph Boulevard.
The woman and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to the hospital.
The FWPD released the following:
On Monday, April 27th, 2026, around 3:10 p.m., officers with Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) were dispatched to a report of an unwanted person at a residence in the 1000 block of Columbia Ave. Upon arrival, officers made contact with an adult female who appeared incoherent.
After an on-scene investigation, officers determined that no crime had occurred and released the female. Shortly after being released, the female entered an unsecured FWPD-marked patrol vehicle and drove it away from the scene. Officers initiated a brief vehicle pursuit, which concluded when the female crashed the stolen patrol vehicle into another vehicle at the intersection of E. State and St. Joseph Boulevards. Both the female and the driver of the other vehicle were transported to a local hospital. No serious injuries have been reported.
This incident remains under investigation by the FWPD and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office. There is no further information available at this time.
