FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Mayor Sharon Tucker and Fire Chief Eric Lahey awarded 12 firefighters the Unit Commendation Recognition Award on Wednesday morning for their efforts during an early morning structure fire in February.
The City says that due to the well-trained, highly motivated firefighters who arrived on the scene, crews successfully rescued a young adult and his pet from a second-story window.

“I’m so proud of our firefighters who risk their lives each day to serve and protect. It’s important that we take time to recognize and highlight the outstanding work that’s being done in our great city,” said Mayor Tucker. “We’re fortunate to live in a community that has excellent firefighters and residents who value and support public safety.”
“The mission of the FWFD is to save lives. The foundation of any successful mission is a highly trained, properly equipped work force,” said Chief Lahey. “Today we celebrate these Fort Wayne firefighters who accepted and successfully carried out that mission using their training and experience to achieve a successful outcome for what could have been a tragedy. You will not find another Department in Indiana that trains as hard and makes as many runs as the Fort Wayne Fire Department. On a day like today I can’t help but feel pride for being part of a such a great Department that utilizes all of its resources, experience, and knowledge to save lives.”
