FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne police searched for hours on Tuesday evening for a reported gunman.
Officers were called to the 4600 block of Taylor Street just before 6:30 p.m. after witnesses reported a man with an assault-style rifle and said that he had fired several shots into a vehicle.
Traffic west of Ardmore was shut down while police searched the area but eventually, no one was found. It is believed that the man slipped into some nearby woods.
Fort Wayne Police Department officials released the following:
On October 19th, 2021 at approximately 6:22 PM dispatched received a call that a male was seen in the area of 4620 Taylor St with what was believed to be an assault style rifle.
When police arrived on scene they spoke with several witnesses. The suspect had fired several shots in the area causing damage to a vehicle, however, no injuries were reported. It was unknown who or what his intended target was. Prior to police arrival, the suspect fled west bound into the woods next to the apartment complex. Officers setup a parameter of the area and contacted specialty teams for support.
Allen County SWAT team, Allen County Negotiations Team, and Fort Wayne Air Support Unit responded to canvas the area in search of the suspect. After several hours of searching the area the suspect was not located. Traffic west of Ardmore Ave on Taylor St was shut down during the search.
