CHICAGO (ADAMS) – A multi-state outbreak of cyclosporiasis is causing widespread concern, so health experts are offering tips on reducing the risk.
Dr. Emily Landon, an infection prevention expert at the University of Chicago Medicine, recommends avoiding fast food chains right now if you’re immunocompromised or have gut health issues.
She says eating at home or at local smaller restaurants is safer. Washing all fruits and vegetables under running water is important before eating, cutting, or cooking. Leafy lettuce, especially bagged lettuce, is suspected in the current “explosive diarrhea” outbreak. Buying whole lettuce and peeling off the two outer layers, she says, is a safer option.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (ADAMS) – The Indiana Department of Health says the state has 206 confirmed cases of Cyclosporiasis.
It is a parasitic infection that causes explosive and severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, fatigue, nausea, and other flu-like symptoms. Health officials are still investigating the source of the illness that has hit over two dozen states so far.
